Dunhill Root Briar 51552 Bent Billiard - 1978 Estate
A Flawless Golden-Grain Aristocrat with Honest Vintage Character
For the Dunhill purist, the Root Briar finish represents the absolute gold standard of natural briar. Because the finish requires completely pristine blocks free of any natural flaws or fills, only a tiny fraction of bowls ever make the cut. This 1978 Group 5 Bent Billiard is a spectacular testament to that standard, showcasing an breathtaking field of swirling birdseye grain and tight cross-grain that dances across the wood under a brilliant, golden-orange stain
The Tailored Shank & The Story It Tells
What sets this specific 51552 apart is its remarkable ergonomics. The shank features Dunhill’s classic, comfortable wide oval profile, but with a wonderfully subtle, crisp edge running along its underside giving it a distinct, tactile geometry in the hand.
This piece is an honest estate classic. It features a touch of light charring on the inner rim from its time of dedicated enjoyment. Rather than aggressively sanding away the briar and altering Dunhill's original bowl geometry, we have left this minor rim darkening intact. It’s a badge of honor that tells you this pipe was an absolute favourite smoker for its previous custodian.
Condition: Very Good / Authentically Restored. The nomenclature is crisp and fully legible, showing the 51552 shape code and the Dunhill Root Briar stamping clearly. The stem has been polished to a deep, glass-like black shine, and the famous White Spot is perfectly intact. The chamber has been clean-reamed. Comes with leather dunhill pipe bag.
Since everyone has their own preferred methods to clean and sterilise internals of the shank and stem, we have intentionally not done this.
