Dunhill Root Briar 31279 Oval-Shank Pear - 1978 Estate
An Investment-Grade Masterpiece of Late-70s English Sophistication
Every so often, a vintage specimen surfaces that perfectly captures why the London workshop's "Root Briar" finish remains the gold standard for natural grain appreciation. This 1978 Dunhill Pear shape is a breathtaking exemplar. Boasting a highly desirable, slightly bent posture paired with a tall, muscular oval shank, this estate piece balances substantial presence with a fluid, graceful silhouette.
A Spectacular Field of Cross-Grain & Birdseye
Dunhill's rigorous selection criteria for the Root finish are on full display here. The forward-canted, teardrop-esque bowl features tight ribbons of flame grain cascading seamlessly down the front and rear arches. This orientation beautifully gives way to expansive flanks covered in a dense, intricately swirling universe of birds-eye grain. Finished in a warm, glowing golden-orange lacquer, the wood possesses a brilliant, three-dimensional depth.
Condition: Pristine / Near-Mint. This 1978 survivor has been cared for with immense reverence. The smooth, rounded rim is entirely clean and free of darkening, and the chamber walls are in flawless, structurally sound condition. The stamped nomenclature on the oval shank is exceptionally crisp, sharp, and deep: 31279 followed by DUNHILL / ROOT BRIAR and a clear MADE IN ENGLAND¹⁸ stamp.
Stem: The original, jet-black vulcanite saddle stem retains a spectacular mirror-like gloss and is completely free of tooth chatter or oxidation. The iconic Dunhill White Spot is perfectly flush, bright, and intact.
Since everyone has their own preferred methods to clean and sterilise internals of the shank and stem, we have intentionally not done this.
