James Upshall 'P' Grade Pickaxe - Estate
Straight from the curator's personal collection, this is an extraordinary, high-grade example of classic English freehand artisanry. Crafted by hand in the historic Tilshead workshop by Charatan alum, this piece is an elegant, slimmed-down interpretation of the dramatic Pickaxe silhouette. The bowl is masterfully formed, tapering down to a razor-sharp, stylised bottom ridge that gives the profile an incredibly dynamic, fluid energy.
As a premium 'P' Grade release, the briar selection is spectacular. Tight, unbroken ribbons of vertical flame grain race up the cheeks of the bowl, perfectly framing its contours, while a dense matrix of fine bird’s-eye caps the smooth, rounded rim. Paired with a slender, sweeping stem, it cuts a stunning, regal profile that sits wonderfully light in the hand.
Condition Report: 9.5/10 near-mint estate condition. This pipe has been exceptionally lightly smoked and meticulously cared for. The walnut-tinted smooth finish is absolutely pristine, glassy, and completely free of any heat blistering or dark spots. The rim is beautifully clean and entirely unmarred. The hand-cut vulcanite stem is pitch-black, holds a mirror-like luster, and shows no teeth chatter (or a microscopic amount) and zero oxidation.
Curation Notes: A rare opportunity to acquire a pristine, hand-carved piece of British pipe-making history. A breathtaking configuration of shape and grain that smokes as beautifully as it looks.
