An Unsmoked 1970s Danish Classic Featuring Natural Plateau Rim & Shank, Hand-Turned Bulbous Stem, and Artful Keel Accent
The Architecture & Danish Pedigree Crafted during Erik Nørding’s prime numeric-grading period, this early Grade 5 freehand is a textbook example of 1970s Danish design. Sculpted from top-tier briar, the bowl sweeps upward into an asymmetric rim crowned with dense, craggy natural plateau. The shank mirrors this raw organic texture at the mortise face. A rich, multi-tone golden-amber polish showcases tight flame grain and fiery cross-grain across the bowl flanks. To work naturally around a minor wood void along the lower line, Nørding carved a dark, deeply textured relief accent—a signature technique of the era that adds incredible visual movement. It is fitted with its original, hand-turned black vulcanite stem featuring a sharp double-bead bulbous expansion.
Curation Notes:
Condition: New Old Stock (NOS) / Unsmoked. Outstanding vintage condition with zero carbon cake or chamber wear. The plateau rim and shank crown remain sharp and raw. The original vulcanite stem is pristine, jet-black, and holds a deep mirror polish. Microscopic storage marks in the wood consistent with decades of careful display/storage, invisible to the naked eye.
Nomenclature: Deeply and cleanly stamped on the smooth shank underside: 5 over NØRDING over MADE IN DENMARK.
