W.O. Larsen Handmade "Super 49" Walrus by Sven Knudsen - 1970s Estate
An Exceptionally Rare Masterwork of Danish Artisan History from a High-Grade Pioneer
For connoisseurs of elite Danish freehand history, this W.O. Larsen "Super 49" is an extraordinary, museum-tier acquisition. Hand-carved during the golden era of the Amagertorv workshop by the legendary patriarch Sven Knudsen, this rare "Walrus" shape represents the absolute pinnacle of fluid, organic mid-century design.
The Sculptural "Walrus" Architecture
Conceptualized with breathtaking artistic vision, the shape is affectionately known as the "Walrus" due to its magnificent, sweeping lines. The bowl lunges forward with muscular presence, flanked by bold, organic ridge lines that flow seamlessly down to a uniquely carved, dual-crested "foot" base that allows the pipe to sit beautifully on its own. The rim is left crisp and natural, contrasting wonderfully with the dense straight grain cascading down the flanks.
A Note on Preservation & Pedigree:
This pipe is an irreplaceable piece of pipe-carving heritage. At some point in its journey, a hair-line crack developed on the shank. Rather than being lost to time, it was masterfully and structurally stabilized. In total transparency to the buyer, the faint remnant of the stable line can still be seen under direct studio light. It remains completely airtight, structurally rock-solid, and ready to be smoked and cherished for generations to come.
Curation Notes:
Condition: Superb vintage cosmetic condition aside from the stabilized shank hairline noted above.
Stem & Comfort: Original high-grade hand-cut vulcanite saddle stem. The draft is wide open and airy, engineered for the effortless, cool smoke that made Sven Knudsen famous.
Nomenclature: Stamped with immaculate clarity on the flat belly of the shank:
Features the coveted W.O. LARSEN over HANDMADE
Proudly carries the elite grading stamp: SUPER and the catalog shape code 49.
Since everyone has their own preferred methods to clean and sterilise internals of the shank and stem, we have intentionally not done this.
