Butz-Choquin "Galion" — Shape 1662 (Circa 1950s/1960s) - Estate

€75.00

A Mid-Century French Classic Featuring a Striking Wide-Oval Shank, Distinctive Panel Geometry, and Beautifully Aged St. Claude Briar

The Architecture & French Soul For the enthusiast who appreciates clean lines and mid-century design, this vintage Butz-Choquin Galion is an incredibly unique find. Dating back to the 1950s or 1960s, this rare French estate model features a wide, distinctively flattened oval shank that transitions seamlessly into a comfortable, broad saddle bit. The design was highly innovative for its time, proudly wearing its historic French patent nomenclature on the wood. The unique shaping maximizes the briar's natural aesthetics, displaying tight, straight flame grain along the flanks of the bowl and shank, concluding in a dense, beautiful display of birdseye across its flat underside. This pipe also Sits very nicely.

Curation Notes:

  • Condition: Very good vintage estate condition. Externally restored with a fresh polish that highlights the warm, reddish-brown grain.

  • The Briar & Flaws (As seen in the images)): In the spirit of total transparency for an estate of this vintage, there are a few small, visible natural sandpits/inclusions on the briar surface. These are purely cosmetic, superficial surface traits that do not impact the integrity of the chamber walls.

  • The Rim & Stem : The rim is clean, smooth, and well-proportioned. The vulcanite saddle stem has been fully de-oxidized and buffed to a deep black gloss, cleanly preserving the classic BC stamped logo.

  • Nomenclature: Deep, historically significant stamping. Top of Shank: Butz-Choquin GALION over MODELE DEPOSE No. 142311. Underside of Shank: ST CLAUDE - FRANCE over shape code 1662.

Since everyone has their own preferred methods to clean and sterilise internals of the shank and stem, we have intentionally not done this.
